Create the Perfect Kid's Bedroom + FREE Gender Neutral Bedroom Mood Board - Postbox Designs (2024)

Most people don’t tackle decorating a room because they feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to start. And that’s why I love Mood Boards people! A Mood Board shows all of your furnishings or fixtures on one page so you can get the feel, or “mood” of what your room is going to look like. Which is SO much more helpful than going around town and buying random items to see if they will work together. (Then when you pair it up with a Shopping List and Floor Plan you have you entire step-by-step Guide to putting that room together). But today we are showing the Mood Board some love!

I’m a lucky duck that once a month I get to create a custom Mood Board for the readers over atRemodelaholicI’ve been a big fan of theirs for a long time-they are experts and mixing home decor style with DIY ideas and budget friendly tips. And today I’m sharing that custom Mood Board with y’all.

And I’ll let you in on a secret…sometimes the Mood Boards I create are the same rooms I’m struggling with in my own house! Two birds, one stone for sure.

I have three kiddos ages 5, 8, and 9 who adore sleeping in the same room. They don’t care if they are crunched up in the same bed, on the floor, or somewhere in between. And I love that my three musketeers want to be together day and night. So for this month’s Mood Board it’s about the kid’s shared bedrooms! Maybe your kids share a room. Or maybe you want to add in an extra bed for those sleepovers. And maybe you have a little one who will soon be transitioning into a shared room with big bro or sis.

Or maybe your kids all have their own rooms and you just want some kid bedroom design ideas!

You are all in the right place! Be sure to check out the FULL blog post I wrote right HEREand you will also find the entire room’s SHOPPING LISTwith links to every item!

I started with this gorgeous eye-candy room inspiration by Kelly Nutt Designs. I love this room because it is totally gender neutral, plus it can be cottage, modern, industrial, or traditional style. That is one home run to mark all of those boxes!

How Do You Create A Beautiful Kid’s Bedroom on a Budget?

I started the room by finding these “I-can’t-believe-the-price-tag” of these upholstered nailhead headboards from WalMart that are only $88 each (#1) !! I layered each bed with these seersucker duvets from Target (#3) and cottage style star bedding (#5), (that would work for a little guy or girl). This bold navy and white rug (#6) gives the room a pop of color, but as every Mom knows this deep navy is also going to hide stains (anyone else’s kids sneak in food after hours??).

I loved the pennants (#4) from the inspiration photo, and you can find your own to decorate your kids walls. Search places like Etsy, Land of Nod, and Ebay, and hang a wall full or one above each bed. And speaking of bedding, you can make the room feel calm and cohesive with the repetition of the same throw pillow on each bed, like this fun swiss cross pillow (#10). Or make each kiddo feel unique by adding their own special pillow to their bed. This inspirational bedroom has an industrial edge, so keep that look going by hanging sconces and/or ceiling lights in this style (#2 and #11).

Sometimes in shared rooms closet space is a premium, so add some extra storage (or a cute way for toy storage) with a woven basket at the end of each bed (#9).

And finally, create a neutral backdrop to mimic this look by painting your walls white (Benjamin Moore “White Dove” is a great option), or add shiplap, or my personal favorite vertical board and batten to the walls.

If space is tight, than bunk beds are the way to go! These custom bunk beds can fit into almost any space. But what I really loved about this space is how they chose different bedding that still coordinates and looks cohesive. It doesn’t have to all match to still flow.

Desire to Inspire

A bold pop of graphic wallpaper, dark colored Jenny Lind beds, and a cottage look with a grown-up feel makes this room work hard while looking beautiful. If your budget is tight, add wallpaper to only one wall (it can be pricey) to give that graphic pop at a 1/4 of the price.
